Know Your Ingredients: Maqui Berry - A Super Antoixidant?

I recently visited Machu Picchu in Peru. What a trip! I can't say enough great things about it. I will say, the altitude is no joke—and that's coming from someone who was raised in Colorado.

At the markets and restaurants, we kept seeing what I originally thought were blueberries. But they were deeper in color. Our guide explained that these were maqui berries and, much like blueberries, these little guys pack a serious punch.

I immediately filed that away in my brain thinking... hmmmm... maybe we could use that ingredient.

Then I got home and started reading the research.

I learned that maqui berry has only recently been commercialized for skincare under sustainable harvesting practices in Patagonia. Even more fascinating, the indigenous Mapuche people consider the maqui tree sacred. It symbolizes peace and resilience, and because it is one of the very first plants to regenerate after wildfires and landslides, it plays a vital role in restoring the surrounding ecosystem. I couldn't help but appreciate the irony. A plant famous for helping nature recover seemed like a pretty fitting ingredient for helping stressed-out skin do the same.

So naturally...

We had to find a place for it.

Today, maqui berry has an important supporting role inside THE DEEP C DIVER, our treatment cleanser designed to do far more than simply wash your face.

What Is Maqui Berry?

Maqui berry (Aristotelia chilensis) is a deep purple berry native to the Patagonia region of Chile and Argentina. While it looks similar to a blueberry, that's where the comparison mostly ends.

Its claim to fame isn't its flavor.

It's its chemistry.

Maqui is naturally packed with compounds called anthocyanins, the same family of antioxidants responsible for the vibrant colors found in berries, grapes and red cabbage. But maqui contains something even more interesting: an exceptionally high concentration of delphinidins, one of the most powerful antioxidant members of the anthocyanin family. According to ingredient research, more than 80% of maqui's anthocyanins are delphinidins. Blueberries contain less than half that amount.

That's one of the reasons maqui has earned a reputation as one of the most antioxidant-rich fruits on Earth.

I know what you are thinking. The concept of an anti-oxidant is so abstract and skincare companies don't do a good job of helping people understand them. I had trouble with it for a long time because it's not something you can see.

So let's talk about what antioxidants actually do.

Antioxidants. The Most Important Skincare Ingredient Nobody Understands.

Imagine slicing an apple.  Leave it sitting on your kitchen counter and twenty minutes later it starts turning brown.

Nothing attacked it.  Oxygen simply reacted with it.

Your skin experiences something remarkably similar every day.

Sunlight.

Pollution.

Smoke.

Stress.

Even poor sleep.

All of these create tiny unstable molecules called reactive oxygen species (ROS)—essentially microscopic sparks that bounce around inside your skin. Those sparks don't just contribute to collagen breakdown. They also tell your skin to produce more pigment by stimulating an enzyme called tyrosinase, one of the key drivers of visible hyperpigmentation like age spots.

That's where antioxidants earn their paycheck.

They don't help to lighten or correct skin tone or spots.  They don't erase sun damage overnight.  They simply help extinguish those microscopic sparks before they snowball into bigger visible problems.

Why We Put Maqui Berry Inside THE DEEP C DIVER

Every ingredient inside THE DEEP C DIVER has a job.

Actually...

Most have several.

Our philosophy has always been that streamlined skincare only works if each ingredient pulls its weight. Brightening isn't the same job as cleansing. Hydration isn't the same job as protecting against environmental stress. Asking one ingredient to do everything usually ends with mediocre results.

Maqui berry fills an important role.

It helps defend skin against those tiny and diabolical sparks while supporting brighter, healthier-looking skin over time.

Think of it as the defensive player on the team.  Not always the one scoring the goals.  But absolutely essential to winning the game.

Brightening Isn't Just About Vitamin C

Ask someone to name a brightening ingredient and nine times out of ten they'll say Vitamin C.

And they're not wrong.

Vitamin C is excellent.

But bright skin isn't created by one ingredient.

It's created by interrupting the biological processes that lead to dullness and uneven pigmentation in the first place.

What makes maqui berry especially interesting is that it approaches this problem from several different directions.

Its delphinidins help neutralize oxidative stress while also reducing the activity of tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for producing melanin. At the same time, maqui naturally contains ellagic acid, another antioxidant compound that interferes with tyrosinase by binding the copper that enzymes need to function.

In other words...

Maqui doesn't simply sit on the sidelines acting like an antioxidant.

It actively helps interrupt the chain reaction that eventually becomes visible pigmentation.

That's one reason ingredient scientists often describe it as vitamin C-like. It delivers many of the same brightening benefits while remaining naturally stable and well tolerated in skincare formulations.

Does It Actually Work?

In a 28-day clinical evaluation of a serum applied once daily containing a standardized maqui berry extract, researchers observed:

Up to 13.8% improvement in skin luminosity
Up to 42.7% reduction in visible redness
* Up to 88.3% improvement in overall skin tone evenness

Perhaps more importantly, nearly every participant showed measurable improvements in brightness or skin tone after four weeks.

Now, let's keep this grounded.

THE DEEP C DIVER isn't that exact serum.  In fact, it's not a serum at all.  But we do recommend that once or twice a week you leave it on skin like a mask to let the actives penetrate. And we're never going to pretend that washing your face is the same as applying a dedicated treatment.

But this research reinforces something we already believe:

The ingredients you cleanse with matter.

If you're washing your face daily anyway and you are masking twice a week anyway, why not make those moments work a little harder?

Why We Care More About Teams Than Superstars

The skincare industry loves hero ingredients.

One month it's snail mucin.

Next month it's exosomes.

Then salmon DNA.

Somehow every new ingredient is always "the future of skincare."

Real skin doesn't work that way.  Skin responds to formulas.  Not headlines.

That's why we spend far more time thinking about how ingredients complement one another than chasing whatever ingredient is currently trending on TikTok.

Maqui berry isn't trying to replace niacinamide.

Or tranexamic acid.

Or vitamin C.

It's there because it makes those ingredients better teammates.  That's how good formulations are built.

Why THE DEEP C DIVER Is More Than A Cleanser

Here's the mistake many brands make.

They treat cleansing as the boring step.

Wash.

Rinse.

Move on.

We see it differently.

If you're already spending sixty seconds washing your face every morning and night, why shouldn't those sixty seconds also help defend against oxidative stress, support brighter skin, gently exfoliate, leave your skin hydrated not dry, and prepare every product that comes next?

That's exactly why THE DEEP C DIVER exists.

Yes, it removes sunscreen.

Yes, it removes makeup.

Yes, it removes oil and impurities.

But while it's doing all of that, ingredients like maqui berry are already getting to work helping support healthier-looking skin over time.
